I’ve had the good fortune of having access to an Oculus Rift DK2 for a couple of weeks and I would like to share my experience with the device. This is without a doubt a revolutionary device and I firmly believe that it will change the world, as seen by my previous post. However the million dollar question right now is, should you go and buy the Oculus Rift DK2 right now? The short answer is probably NOT, unless… please continue reading below for my thoughts.
I'm sorry:( got this email from dropbox and it was autodisabled. It doesn't work apparently so no problem i guess. I'd suggest you to download the unity SDK which is free (4.5.2) and the unity sdk plugin from oculus and try to compile it yourself.
This is the unit that I was able to play with. Not much to say.
Setting up the Oculus Rift DK2 is somewhat easy. The hardware is trivial to assemble. Just plug in the right cables to the webcam, the USBs and the HDMI to your computer and you’re set up. Rough draft 1 5.
However the software is a bit more tricky. Basically you should follow these steps:
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to test very many apps, most of them I could not make work with the Oculus. The few that I tested were:
Iringg 1 0 42 download free. This is the basic most well known Oculus demo. Its supposed to be a house in Tuscany with a small outside garden. I can’t say I was very impressed with the graphics but it is enough to make you feel like you are there and is a good first demo to try. I give it a 3/5. Download Tuscany Demo
This was probably the most fun demo I tried for the Oculus Rift DK2. The basic premise of the game is that you must keep two keyboard keys pressed while the game tries to scare you into letting go of them. At a party I made my friends try this game and I must say that the reactions were priceless. This is definitely a must try game and I give it a 4.5/5. Download Dont Let Go
The owner of the Oculus Rift DK2 had bought this game and I was able to play with it for a while. This one was a pleasant surprise as I wasn’t expecting to enjoy a game whose sole purpose is driving a truck across towns. How do you play sims 4. The truck and the environment are believable enough and the fact that the maps are based on real cities make this for a very interesting trip. This one takes 4/5. Download Euro Truck Simulator2
This is another fun demo and this one allows you to walk underwater and see a multitude of sea life. Focus 1.10.0 for macos. Not the most exciting demo but some of my friends found this one very relaxing and enjoyed it very much. I advise you to at least give it a try. I consider this one to be a 4/5. Download Ocean Rift
The last one here is not a demo nor a game but a video player that I found very amusing. It introduced me to some video formats that I didn’t know about, formats like full dome, fisheye stereo, 360 Degree and lots more. Basically it just plays video files, but depending on your preferences you can change the size of the screen in front of your eyes and make it as small as a cellphone or as big as a movie theatre. I enjoyed very much searching around the internet for videos recorded on the several formats and trying them on the Whirligig player. I’d give this media player a 4.5/5. Download Whirligig
Most of the demos/games that I tested were from this post on Reddit, I found it to be the most extensive and frequently updated page available.
Like I said previously, for the vast majority of users, I believe you should not buy the Oculus Rift DK2. Although impressive it is still a development kit and many edges still need to be trimmed before the final product ships. On the other hand, if you are a game developer and are somewhat interested in the subject of virtual reality, you should have bought it already. The revolution is just beginning and if you want to find a space for yourself in this market you should start as soon as possible.
